Recommended Books

I am a big reader. These are some of the many books which have helped me to understand and deepen my ongoing evolution. The mindsets revealed by the authors of these books can compliment coaching and serve as guides in their own right.

Wake Up! You are Successful - so why aren't you Happy?

For many of us the conscious journey towards creating a fulfilling life comes with the realization that we are not as happy as society tells us we should be. These two books take a look beyond the cultural assumptions of “The American Dream” to examine what really brings lasting happiness.

Authentic Happiness“Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment” - Martin Seligman

Grounded in modern psychological research, Authentic Happiness reveals what creates lasting fulfillment. If you find that your life path is not leading you towards greater happiness, this book could be very helpful. Martin Seligman, Ph.D. is a former president of the American Psychological Association and a leader in the Positive Psychology movement - dedicated to using psychology to deepen our understanding of joy and happiness.

A New Earth“A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose”- Eckhart Tolle

Building on the astonishing success of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle takes an honest look at the current state of humanity. He implores us to see and accept that this state, which is based on an erroneous identification with the egoic mind, is one of dangerous insanity. He also points to ways to go beyond the ego to embrace our deeper life purpose.

Sabbatical Journeys

These books are autobiographical stories of the sabbatical journey into a life of deeper fulfillment. They each follow their authors on a modern-day quest as they follow the subtle clues of their inner wisdom to lead then towards a new vision for their work.

Synchronicity“Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership”- Joseph Jaworski

Through the lens of an autobiographical history, Jaworski points to the underlying connection between people and events that we experience as synchronicity. He shows that (for him at least) leadership is the process of trusting and following the path revealed by synchronistic events.

Executive in Passage“Executive in Passage: Career in Crisis the Door to Uncommon Fulfillment” - Donald Marrs

This one tells of a senior advertising executive and his path through career and life crisis to a trust in his intuitive wisdom that leads eventually to a sense of peace and fulfillment beyond his wildest expectations.

Lifestyle Entrepreneurship

Not Just a LivingNot Just a Living: The Complete Guide to Creating a Business That Gives You a Life” - Mark Henricks

Absolutely the best book on the subject of lifestyle entrepreneurship that I have found. Mark Henricks knows his subject from the inside out. He is both a long-standing lifestyle entrepreneur as a freelance writer and also one of the leading writers on the subject with regular columns in Entrepreneur magazine and StrartupJournal.com.

Creating Your Life

The following two are the best I have read about approaching life as a creative undertaking. Each is a complete instruction guide from an accomplished artist about how to apply the principles of creating art to your life. You can create it any way you want to.

The Path of Least Resistance“The Path of Least Resistance: Learning to Become the Creative Force in Your Own Life” - Robert Fritz

Robert Fritz demonstrates that any of us has the innate power to create. Discover the steps of creating; the importance of creating what you truly love, how to focus on the creative process to move from where you are to where you want to be, and much more.

The Art of Possibility“The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life”- Rosamund Stone and Ben Zander

In a very easy to read style, using lots of personal examples, husband and wife team Zander and Stone explains how a positive attitude and approach to those you work with or lead (he is an orchestra conductor, she a coach) results in great things happening. Each chapter has a relevant "lesson", and overall it's a great read for anyone interested in creating a positive, supportive environment for those around them.

Body-Mind Science

One of the consistent challenges that I (and many of my clients) face is getting beyond the limitations of the thinking/intellectual mind. These books are both science books that point to the wider network of intelligence that resides within our bodies: the science behind the body-mind.

Molecules of Emotion“Molecules of Emotion: Why You Feel the Way You Feel” - Candace Pert

Featured in the movie “What the Bleep...?”, Candace Pert is a leading research scientist who has conducted ground breaking studies into the biochemistry behind our emotional states. In this book, she makes the topic accessible and entertaining as she weaves it into her personal story.

Biology of Belief“The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter and Miracles” - Bruce Lipton

The Biology of Belief is a groundbreaking work in the field of New Biology. Author Dr. Bruce Lipton is a former medical school professor and research scientist. His experiments, and those of other leading-edge scientists, have examined in great detail the processes by which cells receive information. The implications of this research radically change our understanding of life. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology; that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the biochemical messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts.
